Economic and management issues involved in the adoption and maintenance of integrated crop-livestock systems MV&Z

Professionals involved in animal and plant production chains are currently confronted with a scenario of contradictions. There is a growing demand for food, on the other hand, social pressures question how food is produced. Within this context, integrated production systems could be an important strategy. Integrated crop-livestock systems (ICL) consists of the implementation of different systems for animal and agricultural production in the same area, planted concurrently, sequentially or in rotation. Profile of the carters, clinical and welfare evaluation of their cart horses in the region of Pirassununga-SP MV&Z

It was applied a questionnaire to establish the socioeconomic identities of carters that live around the city of Pirassununga, in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in order to associate it to the state of welfare undergone by their cart horses. The evaluation was conducted from August 2012 until July 2013 through questionnaires made during the Carter’s Project, sponsored by the School of Animal Science and Food Engineering (FZEA/USP), and through home visits to the carters previously enrolled in the project, obtaining a sample of 26 individuals. Furthermore, it was made an evaluation of 49 records of horses attended previously (October 2011 to June 2012) in order to analyze their most frequent health problems. In the early 2000s, sheep industry began to occupy a prominent position in Brazilian agribusiness, attracting investors and being recognized as a new alternative for farming diversification. Many breeders and new industries emerged, motivated by the deficit between production and demand for lamb in the country, which leads to the import of hundreds of thousands of tons of sheep meat every year. Nearly a decade has passed since the initial euphoria, which saw intense inflow of breeders to the activity, and this essay aims to make a brief summary of important facts occurred in 2013 regarding this supply chain, and to present some perspectives for next year. This essay presents reflections on the importance of information to lamb supply chain, on the challenges exacerbated by information asymmetry and on some initiatives to mitigate the problem. Meat sheep industry still suffers from a lack of organization and communication between segments. Breeders who are aware about the need of adopting a business view are seeking for assistance and information, but many breeders are not. This situation is related to the difficulties of information diffusion, due to the scarcity of extension agents and professionals in sheep breeding. Access to information does not constitute an entry barrier for initiating the activity, but the lack of technical knowledge can be an obstacle to its viability. There is need to improve...
